Ayrılmaz fiil + edat (verb + preposition) çiftleri
İngilizcede pek çok fiil nesnesine yalnızca tek bir sabit edatla (on, to, in, of, for, from) bağlanır ve bir edattan sonra fiil gelirse o fiil her zaman -ing alır. Türkçedeki durum ekleri («-meyi başarmak, -de ısrar etmek, -den oluşmak») İngilizcedeki edatla birebir örtüşmediği için bu çiftler birlikte ezberlenir.

Fiil + Edat + -ing: insist on · object to · succeed in · apologize for · consist of · depend on
İngilizcenin değişmez kuralı şudur: Bütün edatlardan (on, in, for, of, from, to) sonra gelen fiil -ing alır. Türkçede «ödemekte ısrar etti» veya «açmayı başardı» derken mastar kullandığımız için insist to pay ya da succeed to open demek çok yaygın bir hatadır; doğrusu insist on paying ve succeed in opening biçimindedir.
En büyük tuzak object to («itiraz etmek») kalıbıdır: buradaki to mastar eki değil, «-e / -a» anlamında bir edattır; bu yüzden arkasından yalın fiil değil fiil-ing gelir (object to paying). Ayrıca consist of («-den oluşmak») durum fiilidir ve asla edilgen (is consisted of) yapılmaz.
Kısayolobject to, look forward to, be used to kalıplarındaki to edattır ve -ing alır.
