«Sanki», varsayım ve gecikmiş vakit kalıpları
Türkçede «gerçekten hasta gibi görünüyor» derken de «her şeyi biliyormuş gibi konuşuyor (ama bilmiyor)» derken de aynı «gibi» edatını kullanırız. İngilizce ise as if / as though sonrasında durumun gerçek mi yoksa hayal mi olduğunu fiilin zamanıyla ayırır.
| İngilizce | Türkçe |
|---|---|
| as if / as though + V1 (present) | sanki … gibi (gerçekten öyle olması muhtemel) |
| as if / as though + V2 / were | sanki …-mış gibi (şu anki gerçeğin tersi / benzetme) |
| as if / as though + had V3 | sanki (daha önce) …-mış gibi (geçmişteki gerçeğin tersi) |
| Suppose / Supposing (that) + V2 … ? | Diyelim ki / Farz et ki … oldu, (ne yapardın?) |
| What if + V2 / had V3 … ? | Ya … olsaydı / olmuş olsaydı? |
| It’s high time + someone + V2 | birinin … yapmasının vakti çoktan geldi de geçiyor |
| It’s about time + someone + V2 | birinin … yapmasının artık vakti geldi (sitemli) |
| creep | sessizce ve alçaktan süzülmek (V2/V3: crept) |
as if / as though: Gerçek izlenim (V1) ↔ Şu anın tersi (V2) ↔ Geçmişin tersi (had V3)
as if ve biraz daha resmî kardeşi as though («sanki, -mış gibi») üç farklı zamanla kurulur: 1) Gördüğümüz veya duyduğumuz kanıta göre durum gerçekten doğruysa normal şimdiki/geniş zaman gelir (It looks as if it is sick).
2) Anlatılan şey şu anki gerçeğin tersi veya bir benzetmeyse bir derece geçmişe çekilip V2 / were kullanılır (The cat creeps as if it were a tiger). 3) Ana eylemden daha önceki bir olayın tersi anlatılıyorsa had + V3 seçilir (It meows as if it hadn’t eaten for days).

|---|---|---|
| Gerçek olasılık (kanıta dayalı) | as if / as though + V1 / is / will | He sounds as if he has a cold. (Sesi kısık, gerçekten hasta olabilir.) |
| Şu anki gerçeğin tersi | as if / as though + V2 / were | He acts as if he owned the hotel. (Otelin sahibi değil.) |
| Geçmişteki gerçeğin tersi | as if / as though + had + V3 | He looks as if he hadn’t slept at all. (Aslında uyudu / bilmiyoruz.) |
as if / as though — «Sanki, -mış gibi». Gerçek bir izlenimi anlatırken normal zamanla, gerçeğin tersini anlatırken bir derece geçmiş zamanla (V2 / had V3) kurulan bağlaç.
Varsayım (Suppose / Supposing / What if) ve It’s high / about time + V2
Birine hayali bir senaryo sorarken If yerine Suppose, Supposing («Diyelim ki, farz et ki») veya What if («Ya … olsaydı?») kullanabiliriz. Şu an/gelecek için hayali varsayımda V2 (Suppose you won the lottery…), geçmişteki hayali varsayımda had + V3 (What if we had missed the train?) gelir.
B2’de gördüğümüz It’s time we left kalıbına C1 düzeyinde high veya about eklendiğinde («vakti çoktan geldi de geçiyor bile!») sitem ve aciliyet vurgusu güçlenir: It’s high time / It’s about time + özne + V2.
KısayolIt’s high time kalıbından sonra to + V1 gelmez; mutlaka özne + V2 kullanılır.

Testten önce bunları bil
- as if / as though: Gerçek izlenim (V1) ↔ Şu anın tersi (V2) ↔ Geçmişin tersi (had V3)
En sık hata: Gerçek olmadığı açıkça verilen bir cümlede Türkçeden etkilenip geniş zaman kullanmak (He isn’t a doctor, but he talks as if he is one)! Gerçeğin tersi anlatılıyorsa fiil mutlaka V2 / were olur: as if he were one.
- Varsayım (Suppose / Supposing / What if) ve It’s high / about time + V2
En sık hata: It’s high time we go veya It’s about time you find a job demek! It’s (high / about) time arkasından bir özne geldiğinde fiil anlamca şimdiyi anlatsa da biçimce her zaman V2 olur: It’s high time we went · It’s about time you found.
