Deyimler (idioms), içindeki kelimelerin tek tek sözlük anlamından bağımsız olarak kalıplaşmış mecaz anlam taşıyan ifadelerdir. Tıpkı Türkçedeki «çocuk oyuncağı» ya da «ağzından baklayı çıkarmak» gibi bütünsel öğrenilir ve içindeki hiçbir kelime değiştirilemez.

Bir işin beklenenden çok kolay olduğunu anlatmak için a piece of cake («çocuk oyuncağı»); hafif hasta veya halsiz hissettiğimizi söylemek için under the weather; çok büyük bir mutluluk için ise on cloud nine («dokuzuncu bulutta / havalarda») kullanılır.
Fiyatın aşırı yüksek olduğunu cost an arm and a leg («ateş pahası olmak»), bir şeyin neredeyse hiç gerçekleşmediğini ise once in a blue moon («kırk yılda bir») deyimiyle vurgularız. Bu deyimlerin tamamı gündelik konuşma diline (informal / spoken) aittir.
