Dolaylı soru giriş kalıpları
Tanımadığımız birine doğrudan Where is the station? diye sormak bazen fazla sert ve kısa duyulur. Başına «Biliyor musunuz…?» veya «Söyleyebilir misiniz…?» eklediğimizde soru hem çok daha kibar olur hem de cümlenin içindeki kelime sırası değişir.

Soru kelimesi + ÖZNE + FİİL · do, does, did düşer
Altın kural: Cümlenin başında Do you know…? veya Could you tell me…? zaten soru sorduğu için, soru kelimesinden (where, when, what, why, how) sonra ikinci bir soru sırası kurulmaz; ÖZNE + FİİL (düz cümle sırası) gelir.
Düz sıraya geçildiği için soru yardımcı fiilleri olan do, does, did tamamen düşer ve fiil normal zaman ekini alır (when the bakery opens, where she went).
KısayolSoru kelimesinden hemen sonra yardımcı fiil değil, özne gelir.

indirect question — Dolaylı soru. Başka bir soru veya cümlenin içine yerleştirilmiş, düz kelime sırasıyla (özne + fiil) kurulan soru.
word order — Kelime sırası. Dolaylı soruda soru kelimesinden sonra özne + fiil sırası korunur.
Evet/hayır soruları: if ve whether · kibar sorular
Cümlenin içinde where, when, what gibi bir soru kelimesi yoksa (yani soru «evet/hayır» sorusuysa), iki parçayı birbirine bağlamak için if ya da whether («-ıp -madığını») kullanılır.
if / whether sonrasında da kural değişmez: ÖZNE + FİİL düz sıradadır ve do / does / did düşer (Do you know if the shop is open?).
Kısayolif ve whether aynı anlamdadır; whether biraz daha resmîdir ve or not ile sık kullanılır.
Could you tell me where the nearest pharmacy is? — Sure, it’s just across the street.
Do you know if Ece is coming with us? — I’m not sure whether she is free today.
The cat wonders if someone is behind the door.
Kedi kapının arkasında biri olup olmadığını merak ediyor.
Do you know if there is any milk in the fridge?

En sık hata: Do you know where is the station? veya Can you tell me what time does the train leave? demek! Soru kelimesinden sonra soru devrikliği biter; düz cümle gibi where the station is ve what time the train leaves denir.
- Soru kelimesi + ÖZNE + FİİL · do, does, did düşer
Dikkat: I wonder… ve I don’t know… ile başlayan cümleler gerçek bir soru değil, düz cümledir; bu yüzden sonlarına soru işareti değil nokta (.) konur.
- Evet/hayır soruları: if ve whether · kibar sorular
En sık hata: I wonder that she is at home demek! Merak edilen veya bilinmeyen bir «evet/hayır» durumunda that kullanılmaz; mutlaka if ya da whether gelir: I wonder if she is at home.
- Evet/hayır soruları: if ve whether · kibar sorular
Yabancı biriyle konuşurken doğrudan What time is it? demek yerine Could you tell me what time it is? demek İngilizcede çok doğal bir nezaket yoludur.
