Sık kullanılan fiil/sıfat → isim dönüşümleri ve edatları
Gündelik konuşmada cümleler kişiler ve fiiller etrafında kurulur (We decided to wait). Akademik yazıda ve resmî raporlarda ise fiil ve sıfatlar isme dönüştürülerek (nominalisation) cümlenin öznesi veya nesnesi yapılır (Our decision to wait…).

Fiil ve sıfattan isme geçiş: Gündelik cümleden akademik üsluba
Bir fiili isme dönüştürdüğümüzde cümlenin diğer parçaları da ona uyum sağlar: fiili niteleyen zarf (-ly), yeni ismin önünde sıfata dönüşür (grew rapidly → rapid growth).
Eylemi yapan özne ise yeni ismin önünde iyelik eki (the cat’s, our) ya da ismin arkasında of öbeği olur: The train departed suddenly → The sudden departure of the train.
Kısayolİsimleştirme sayesinde iki ayrı cümle, neden-sonuç bildiren tek ve özlü bir akademik cümleye dönüşür.

nominalisation — Akademik ve resmî üslupta fiil veya sıfatları isim öbeklerine (decision, arrival, importance) dönüştürerek cümle kurma.
İsim öbeklerinde edat uyumu: in, for, of, between
İsimleştirilmiş kelimeler arkalarından gelen isme rastgele bağlanmaz; her grubun sabit bir edatı vardır. Artış, azalma ve değişim bildiren isimler (increase, rise, decrease, drop, fall, change) değişen şeyin önünde her zaman in alır: a sharp drop in temperature · the rise in prices.
İhtiyaç, talep ve sebep isimleri (need, demand, reason, request) for ile; genel tamlayan ilişkileri (construction, completion, cost) of ile; iki öğe arasındaki bağ (link, difference, relationship) ise between … and … ile kurulur.
KısayolTürkçede hepsi «-ın / -da / -a» ile söylense de İngilizcede increase in ile demand for birbirinin yerine geçmez.

En sık hata: a / the / my gibi belirteçlerden sonra fiil kökünü olduğu gibi bırakmak (make a decide, after the arrive of the guests). Belirteçten sonra isim biçimi (make a decision, the arrival) zorunludur.

İkinci sık hata: Fiil isme dönüştüğünde yanındaki zarfı (-ly) değiştirmeyi unutmak (a dramatically improvement). İsimleri zarflar değil sıfatlar niteler: a dramatic improvement.
- İsim öbeklerinde edat uyumu: in, for, of, between
En sık hata: «Fiyatların artışı / sıcaklığın düşüşü» derken Türkçe tamlayan ekine kapılıp the increase of prices ya da a drop of temperature demek! Değişen alanın önünde her zaman in kullanılır (of yalnız rakam/oran verilirse gelir: an increase in prices of five dollars).
- İsim öbeklerinde edat uyumu: in, for, of, between
Üslup uyarısı: İsimleştirme cümleyi resmîleştirir; ancak aynı cümlede 4-5 soyut ismi art arda dizmek metni anlaşılmaz kılar. Özneyi isimleştirdiğinde yüklemi net bir fiil (led to, caused, improved) olarak bırak.
