Zaman kilidi kelimeleri
Bazen geçmişte yaptığımız bir seçimin sonucu bugünü etkiler («dün erken yatsaydım şimdi yorgun olmazdım»); bazen de genel bir özelliğimiz geçmişteki bir olayı etkilemiştir. İki yarısı farklı zamanlara bakan bu cümlelere karma şart (mixed conditional) denir.

Geçmiş şart → şimdiki sonuç: If + had + V3, would + V1 (now)
En sık kullanılan karma şart kalıbında şart geçmiştedir (3. şartın if kısmı: If + had + V3), ama onun sonucu şu anda yaşanmaktadır (2. şartın ana cümlesi: would / wouldn’t + yalın fiil).
Ana cümledeki now, right now, today, still gibi kelimeler sonucun geçmişte kalmadığını, şu anki durumu anlattığını kilitler: If I had eaten breakfast, I wouldn’t be hungry now.

Why are you so sleepy today? — Because I stayed up late. If I <b>had gone</b> to bed early, I <b>wouldn’t be</b> sleepy now.

If the cat had eaten its food this morning, it wouldn’t be hungry now.

mixed conditional — Şart kısmı ile sonuç kısmının farklı zamanlara (biri geçmişe, diğeri şimdiki zamana) ait olduğu karma şart cümlesi.

Karma şartın ikinci türünde yön tersine döner: Şu anki genel bir durum veya karakter özelliği (2. şartın if kısmı: If + V2 / were) yüzünden geçmişte bir olay gerçekleşmemiştir (3. şartın ana cümlesi: would have + V3).
Örneğin «Bu kadar yoğun olmasam (genel/şu anki durumum) dün partine gelirdim (dünkü sonuç)» cümlesi If I weren’t so busy, I would have come yesterday biçiminde kurulur.

- Geçmiş şart → şimdiki sonuç: If + had + V3, would + V1 (now)
En sık hata: If I had studied medicine, I would have been a doctor now. Cümlenin sonunda now («şimdi») varken would have been (geçmiş sonuç) kullanılmaz; şu anki durumu anlatmak için I would be a doctor now denir.

İpucu: Sınavlarda ve testlerde doğru şıkkı zaman zarfları belirler. Ana cümlede now, right now, today, still varsa would + V1; yesterday, last night, two hours ago varsa would have + V3 seçilir.
