Geçmişteki bir olaydan daha önce başlamış ve o ana kadar devam etmiş eylemleri ya da geçmişte gözle görülür bir iz bırakmış süreçleri anlatırken past perfect continuous kullanılır.

Geçmişte süren süreç ve izi: had been + -ing
Geçmişteki bir olaydan ya da andan (when he arrived, at half past nine) daha önce başlamış ve o ana kadar sürmüş eylemleri anlatmak için bütün öznelerle had been + fiil-ing kullanılır.
Eylem o geçmiş anda az önce bitmiş olsa bile, geçmişteki gözle görülür sonucunu ve sebebini (yorgunluk, ıslak tüyler, çamurlu patiler) açıklarken de bu yapı seçilir.

past perfect continuous — Geçmişteki bir olaydan önce başlamış, o ana kadar sürmüş ya da o anda iz bırakmış eylem zamanı (had been + fiil-ing).
had been -ing mi, had + V3 mü? · durum fiilleri
İki yapı arasındaki nüans, present perfect ayrımının geçmişteki ikizidir: eylemin ne kadar sürdüğüne (sürece) odaklanıyorsak had been + fiil-ing; eylemin tamamlandığına veya kaç tane / kaç kez yapıldığına odaklanıyorsak had + V3 seçilir.
Durum fiilleri (know, believe, want, like, own ve «sahip olmak» anlamındaki have) -ing almadığı için süre verilse bile her zaman had + V3 ile kurulur.
Kısayol«Ne kadar süredir yapıyordu?» sorusu had been -ing; «Kaç tane bitmişti?» ya da durum fiili had + V3 ister.
