Elma, fincan ve kitabı «bir, iki, üç» diye tane tane sayabiliriz. Ancak sıvılar, tozlar ve kesilerek tüketilen gıdalar (milk, bread, cheese) ile money ve information İngilizcede sayılamaz.

Sayılabilen ve sayılamayan: two apples · some bread

Sayılabilen isimler (apple, cup, cat) tekilde a / an, çoğulda -s alır. Sayılamayan isimler ise asla a / an almaz, çoğul (-s) olmaz ve her zaman tekil fiil (is / was) ile kullanılır.

Olumlu cümlede miktarı tam söylemeden «biraz» (sayılamayan) ya da «birkaç» (çoğul) demek için some gelir:

Masada ve mutfakta neler var?

There are some apples on the table.some + çoğul

Masada birkaç elma var.

There is some milk in the white bowl.some + sayılamaz

Beyaz kapta biraz süt var.

En sık hata: Fırından ekmek alırken Türkçedeki gibi a bread / two breads ya da «bilgiler» anlamında informations demek. Bu kelimeler İngilizcede asla -s almaz!

Lira, dolar veya madeni parayı sayabilirsin (five dollars, two coins) ama «para» kelimesinin kendisi (money) sayılamaz ve tekildir: The money is here.

Sayılabilen ↔ Sayılamayan karşılaştırması

Türkçede «ekmekler, bilgiler» çoğul yapılır ama İngilizcede bread ve information tekil kalır.

Olumsuz ve soruda any · Ölçü birimleri: a cup of, a piece of

Cümle olumsuz olduğunda veya soru sorulduğunda some yerini any kelimesine bırakır (There isn’t any milk · Are there any apples?).

Sayılamayan bir şeyi adetle söylemek istediğimizde ise önüne kap ya da parça adı koyarız: a bottle of water, a piece of bread:

Hiç var mı? Ne kadar var?

Kahvaltıda iki parça peynir yedi.

«İki çay, iki su» derken malzemeyi değil kabı çoğul yaparız: two cups of tea, two bottles of water, two pieces of bread.

a piece of (bir parça) çok kurtarıcıdır: peynir (cheese), kek (cake), ekmek (bread) ve hatta bilgi (a piece of information) ile kullanılır.

some / any ve kap-parça kalıpları

Çoğul yapılırken sayılamayan kelime değil, önündeki kap/parça çoğullanır (two cups of tea).
