Konuşmaya yön veren kalıplar (Discourse markers)
Doğal İngilizce konuşmada cümleleri yalnız dilbilgisi kuralları değil, konuşmacının tavrını gösteren küçük geçiş kalıpları birbirine bağlar. Bu kalıplara söylem belirleyiciler (discourse markers) denir.

Düzeltme, şerh ve tesadüf: actually · mind you · having said that · as it happens
Karşı tarafın yanlış bildiği bir şeyi kibarca düzeltirken actually («aslında»); konuşulan konuyla ilgili hoş bir tesadüfü paylaşırken as it happens («tesadüfe bak ki / işin doğrusu») kullanılır.
Az önce söylediğimiz olumlu ya da olumsuz bir yargıyı dengelemek, «gerçi şu tarafı da var» diye şerh düşmek istediğimizde ise cümleye Mind you, ya da Having said that, ile başlarız.

Sohbet sürerken akla gelen yan bir konuyu açmak için by the way («bu arada»); dağılan sohbeti asıl konuya döndürmek ya da konuşmayı kapatmak için anyway («neyse, her neyse») kullanılır.
Kişisel ve dobra bir fikri yumuşatırken to be honest («açıkçası»); kendi sözümüzü açarken I mean («yani»); karşı tarafa bilmediği bir sebebi açıklarken you see («anlayacağın»); son sözü özetlerken at the end of the day («sonuçta») seçilir.

En sık hata: actually kelimesini «şu anda, hâlihazırda» sanmak! actually «aslında» demektir; «şu anda» demek için currently ya da at the moment kullanılır: She is currently working in Ankara.
- Konu geçişi, açıklama ve özet: by the way · anyway · to be honest · I mean · you see
En sık hata: Bir konuşmaya ya da e-postaya ilk cümle olarak By the way,… ile başlamak! by the way yalnız zaten sürmekte olan bir sohbetin ortasında yeni bir parantez açarken kullanılır.

mind you, by the way, I mean, you see, at the end of the day samimi konuşma kalıplarıdır; akademik makalelerde ve resmî iş mektuplarında kullanılmaz.
