Odada neler var?

Bir odada, masada ya da sokakta neyin var ya da yok olduğunu anlatırken önce o yerdeki eşyaların adını biliriz.

Fotoğraftaki numaraya ya da listedeki kelimeye dokun; İngilizce okunuşunu dinle.

Bir yerde «var»: There is · There are

Türkçede «Masada bir elma var» da desek «Masada beş elma var» da desek aynı «var» kelimesini kullanırız. İngilizcede ise var olan şey tekilse There is, çoğulsa There are gelir.

Cümle İngilizcede «Var + ne + nerede» sırasıyla kurulur. Örneklere bak:

Tekil mi, çoğul mu?

There is a box on the floor. — **There is** a box on the floor.

Yerde bir kutu var.

There is a small bird on the bench. — **There is** a small bird on the bench.

Bankta küçük bir kuş var.

There is food in the fridge. — **There is** food in the fridge.

Buzdolabında yiyecek var.

There are five apples on the table. — **There are** five apples on the table.

Masada beş elma var.

There are two white cups on the table. — **There are** two white cups on the table.

Masada iki beyaz fincan var.

There are five books on the desk. — **There are** five books on the desk.

Çalışma masasında beş kitap var.

There are two cats in the room. — **There are** two cats in the room.

Odada iki kedi var.

En sık hata: There is two cats in the room. Türkçede tek «var» olduğu için çoğulda da There is deme eğilimi olur. İsim çoğulsa mutlaka There are two cats denir.

have got ile there is farkı: I have got a cat. (Benim bir kedim var — sahiplik); There is a cat in the room. (Odada bir kedi var — bulunma).

There is ve There are

Sayılamayan isimler (milk, water, food) her zaman tekil sayılır ve There is alır.

«Yok» ve «Var mı?»: There isn’t · Is there …?

«Yok» demek için not eklenir: There isn’t (tekil / sayılamaz) ve There aren’t (çoğul).

«Var mı?» diye sorarken ise Is ya da Are başa geçer: Is there …? / Are there …?

Is there a cat in the basket? – Yes, there is.
Are there apples on the table? – Yes, there are.
Is there milk in the fridge? – No, there isn’t.

Buzdolabında ne var, ne yok?

There isn’t any food in the fridge. — **There isn’t** any food in the fridge.

Buzdolabında hiç yiyecek yok.

There isn’t any water in the glass. — **There isn’t** any water in the glass.

Bardakta hiç su yok.

There isn’t a train at the station. — **There isn’t** a train at the station.

İstasyonda tren yok.

Sepette kedi var mı? — Evet, var.

Are there two cups on the table? — Yes, there are. — **Are there** two cups on the table? — Yes, there are.

Masada iki fincan var mı? — Evet, var.

There aren’t any clouds in the sky.

Gökyüzünde hiç bulut yok.

No, there isn’t.

Is there a café near here? — No, there isn’t.

Yakında bir kafe var mı? — Hayır, yok.

Kısa cevaplarda Yes, it is. yerine sorudaki yapıyı koruyarak Yes, there is. ya da No, there isn’t. denir.

Olumsuz ve soru cümlelerinde çoğul ve sayılamayan isimlerin önünde sık sık any (hiç) kelimesini görürsün: There isn’t any milk. · Are there any books?
