Pişmanlık ve geçmiş şart kelimeleri
Geçmişte gerçekleşmiş bir olayın tersini hayal ederken ya da pişmanlık anlatırken («bilseydim arardım», «erken çıksaydık treni kaçırmazdık») üçüncü şart cümlesi (third conditional) kullanılır.

Gerçekleşmemiş geçmiş: If + had + V3, would have + V3
Kalıp iki parçadır: If + had / hadn’t + V3, ana cümlede ise would have / wouldn’t have + V3. İki olay da geçmişte kalmıştır ve gerçekte tersi olmuştur.
Birinci ve ikinci şartta olduğu gibi burada da if yan cümlesine would have koymak kesinlikle YASAKTIR (If I had known, If I would have known değil!).

third conditional — Geçmişte gerçekleşmemiş olayları ve onların geçmişteki hayali sonuçlarını anlatan şart cümlesi (If + had + V3, would have + V3).
Pişmanlık bağlamı ve 2. Şart ↔ 3. Şart farkı
Türkçede hem 2. şart hem de 3. şart aynı ekle («bilseydim söylerdim») çevrilebildiği için Türk öğrenciler geçmişteki bir olaya yanlışlıkla V2 koyar (If I knew yesterday — YANLIŞ!).
Ayrım zaman çizgisindedir: Şu anda veya gelecekte hayali bir durumdan söz ediyorsak 2. şart (If + V2, would + V1); artık geri döndürülemez geçmişteki bir olaydan (yesterday, last night, this morning) söz ediyorsak 3. şart (If + had + V3, would have + V3) kullanılır.
KısayolTürkçesi aynı görünse bile İngilizcede zaman zarfı (now / today ↔ yesterday / last week) yapıyı kilitler.

En sık hata: If I would have known, I would have called you. Türkçede iki tarafta da «-seydim / -ardım» olduğu için iki tarafa da would have koymak çok yaygındır. if kısmında yalnız had + V3 gelir: If I had known…
- Gerçekleşmemiş geçmiş: If + had + V3, would have + V3
İkinci sık hata: If I had know ya da would have went demek! Hem had hem de would have arkasından mutlaka 3. hal (V3) ister (had known, would have gone).

En sık hata: Geçmişteki bir olaydan konuşurken If I knew you were ill yesterday, I would visit you demek! Cümlede yesterday olduğu için 2. şart değil 3. şart zorunludur: If I had known you were ill yesterday, I would have visited you.

If I had had… kalıbından korkma: ilk had geçmişin geçmişi yardımcısıdır, ikinci had ise «sahip olmak» (have) fiilinin 3. halidir (If I had had enough money = Yeterli param olsaydı).
