«En …» üstünlük kalıpları
İki şeyi kıyaslarken «daha» (bigger, more beautiful) diyorduk. Bir grubun içinden birincisini seçip «en büyük, en iyi» derken ise başa mutlaka the gelir.

Kısa sıfatlarda «en»: the -est · the -iest
Kısa sıfatlarda karşılaştırma eki olan -er yerine the … -est gelir (smaller → the smallest, bigger → the biggest).
Yazım kuralları karşılaştırmayla birebir aynıdır: big → the biggest (çift g) ve happy → the happiest (y → iest):

Yavru kedi evdeki en küçük kedidir.

Dolap odadaki en yüksek eşyadır.

Ocak yılın en soğuk ayıdır.
happy → the happiestIt is the happiest cat in the world.
O, dünyadaki en mutlu kedidir.
Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
Everest Dağı dünyadaki en yüksek dağdır.
My grandfather is the oldest person in my family.
Dedem ailemdeki en yaşlı kişidir.
En sık hata: Kısa sıfata the most big ya da the most cheap demek. Kısa sıfatlar most almaz; doğrusu her zaman the biggest ve the cheapest biçimidir.
Unutma: «en büyük» tek bir tane olduğu için başında mutlaka the (ya da my best friend gibi bir iyelik sıfatı) bulunur.
Sıfat → Karşılaştırma (-er) → En üstünlük (the -est)
En üstünlük derecesinde sıfatın önündeki the (veya my/our) asla düşmez.

the most … · the best / the worst · in the house
Uzun sıfatların önüne «en» anlamında the most gelir (the most comfortable, the most expensive); düzensizlerde ise good → the best ve bad → the worst olur.
Cümlenin sonunda bir yer ya da grup söylüyorsak (the house, town, the world, my family) önünde of değil, in kullanılır:

Kanepe evdeki en rahat yerdir.
good → the bestThis is the best café in town.
Burası şehirdeki en iyi kafedir.
bad → the worstYesterday was the worst day of the week.

İstanbul Türkiye’deki en kalabalık şehirdir.
This is the most expensive hotel in the city.
Bu, şehirdeki en pahalı oteldir.
Ece is the best student in the class.
Ece sınıftaki en iyi öğrencidir.
En sık hata: Türkçede «evin en büyüğü, ailemin en uzunu» derken tamlayan eki (-in/-ın) kullandığımız için İngilizcede of the house / of my family demek. Mekân ve gruplarda her zaman in gelir: in the house, in my family, in the world.
İkinci hata: the bestest ya da the most best demek. the best zaten «en iyi» demektir; üstüne başka ek almaz.
Uzun sıfatlar, düzensizler ve in / of ayrımı
Yer ve grup adlarıyla in (in the room, in my family), zaman dilimleriyle of (of the year, of my life) gelir.
