Olumsuz: didn’t + yalın fiil

Geniş zamanda don’t / doesn’t nasıl çalışıyorsa, geçmiş zamanda da bütün öznelerle tek bir yardımcı kullanılır: didn’t (did not).

Geçmiş zaman yükünü didn’t üstlendiği için arkasından gelen fiil -ed almaz ve birinci (yalın) haline geri döner:

Yağmur yağdığı için dışarı çıkmadık.

En sık hata: I didn’t saw ya da He didn’t went. Bir cümlede iki geçmiş eki yan yana durmaz: didn’t varsa fiil mutlaka yalındır (I didn’t see · He didn’t go).

Özne he / she / it olsa bile didn’t hiç değişmez; herkes için tek biçim didn’ttir.

Soru ve kısa cevap: Did you …? · What did you …?

Soru sorarken cümlenin başına Did gelir ve ana fiil yine yalın kalır: Did you sleep well?

Soru kelimesi (What, Where, When) varsa Did’in de önüne geçer:

  • Did the cat eat the croissant? – Yes, it did.
  • Did you go out last night? – No, I didn’t.
  • What did you buy at the market? – I bought bread and milk.

En sık hata: Did you went to work? Sorunun başında Did varken fiil asla geçmiş halde kalmaz → Did you go to work?

Dikkat: was / were ile kurulan durum cümlelerinde did / didn’t kullanılmaz! «Yorgun muydun?» derken Did you tired? değil, Were you tired? denir.

Soruda Did varsa fiil yalındır; cevaptaki olumlu cümlede ise fiil tekrar geçmiş (2. hal) olur.
