Phrasal verb nedir, parçacık ne yapar?
Phrasal verb, bir fiille bir ya da iki küçük kelimenin (up, out, off, on, in, over…) birleşmesiyle oluşan fiildir. Bu küçük kelimelere parçacık denir. Birleşince çoğu zaman yeni bir anlam doğar: give «vermek», give up «vazgeçmek»; look «bakmak», look for «aramak», look after «(birine) bakmak, ilgilenmek».
Türkçede bu anlamları çoğu zaman tek bir fiil taşır: ertelemek, vazgeçmek, öğrenmek. İngilizcede de tek kelimelik karşılıklar vardır (postpone, abandon, discover), ama günlük konuşmada phrasal verb çok daha doğal duyulur: put off, give up, find out. Dizide, şarkıda ve gündelik sohbette bu fiillerle sürekli karşılaşılır.

Bu anlamlar bir ipucudur, kural değildir. give up (vazgeçmek), put off (ertelemek), turn out (… olduğu ortaya çıkmak) gibi pek çok fiilin anlamı parçalardan tahmin edilemez; bunlar yeni bir kelime gibi öğrenilir.

Up ve down: yukarı, aşağı, tamamen
up bu listenin en kalabalık grubudur. Bir kısmında gerçekten «yukarı» fikri vardır (get up, pick up), bir kısmında ise işin tamamlandığını gösterir: clean up «iyice toparlamak», grow up «büyüyüp yetişkin olmak». give up, make up, end up gibi fiillerde anlam parçalardan çıkmaz.

down çoğunlukla aşağı inmeyi ya da bir şeyin azalmasını anlatır: sit down, slow down, calm down. turn up ile turn down zıt çifttir: sesi açmak ve kısmak. turn down ayrıca «bir teklifi reddetmek» demektir.

Out, off ve on: dışarı, kapalı, açık
out dışarı çıkmayı (go out, eat out), bir bilginin ortaya çıkmasını (find out, figure out, turn out) ya da bir işin baştan sona yapılmasını (carry out, fill out) anlatır.

off ayrılma, uzaklaşma ve kapanma; on ise bağlanma, açık olma ve devam fikri taşır. Bu yüzden ikisi çoğu zaman zıt çift oluşturur.

In, over, back, away ve öteki parçacıklar
in ve into içeri girmeyi, bir şeyin içine ulaşmayı anlatır. into çoğu zaman arkasından bir nesneyle gelir: break into a house, run into a friend, turn into ice.

Araçlarda iki ayrı çift vardır. Otomobil ve taksi için get in ve get out of kullanılır (get in the car); otobüs, tren, uçak ve bisiklet için get on ve get off (get on the bus). «get on the car» yanlıştır.
over bir şeyin üstünden geçmeyi ya da onu baştan sona ele almayı, back geri dönmeyi ve geri vermeyi, away uzaklaşmayı ve ortadan kalkmayı anlatır.

Ayrılabilen, ayrılmayan ve üç parçalılar
Nesne alan phrasal verb’lerde asıl soru nesnenin nereye geleceğidir. Bazı fiiller ayrılabilir: nesne parçacıktan önce de sonra da gelebilir. Bazıları ayrılmaz: nesne her zaman parçacıktan sonradır.

Kısayolİngilizce öğrenci sözlüklerinin çoğu ayrılabilen fiili turn something off, ayrılmayanı look for something diye gösterir. something ortadaysa fiil ayrılabilir, sondaysa ayrılmaz.
Önceki tablolardan get over, run into, go through ve araçla kullanılan get on, get off ayrılmayan gruptadır: get over it, run into her. Bu gruptan dört sık fiil daha:

Üç parçalı phrasal verb’lerde fiilden sonra iki parçacık gelir (put up with, run out of). Bunlar hiçbir zaman ayrılmaz ve nesne her zaman en sona gelir. Arkalarından fiil gelecekse fiil -ing alır: look forward to seeing, make up for being late.

- turn down «sesi kısmak» anlamında ayrılabilen bir fiildir.
- Nesne bir zamir (it); ayrılabilen fiilde zamir fiille parçacığın arasına girer.
- turn down it bu yüzden yanlıştır. İsim nesneyle iki sıra da olur: turn down the music · turn the music down.

Bir fiil, birden çok anlam ve resmî karşılıklar
Sık kullanılan phrasal verb’lerin çoğunun birden fazla anlamı vardır. Doğru anlamı cümlenin geri kalanı söyler: nesneye ve bağlama bakılır. take off your coat giysiyle ilgilidir; the plane took off uçağın havalanmasıdır.

Phrasal verb’lerin çoğunun tek kelimelik, daha resmî bir karşılığı vardır. Konuşmada ve arkadaşa yazılan mesajda phrasal verb doğal duyulur; iş e-postasında, raporda ve akademik metinde tek kelimelik fiil daha uygundur.

Tek kelimelik karşılık her bağlamda birebir oturmaz. Önce phrasal verb’ün o cümledeki anlamına bakılır: turn down the radio «reddetmek» değil «sesi kısmak»tır, bu yüzden yerine reject konmaz.
Örnek. Resmî bir e-postaya uygun hâle getirin: We put off the meeting because the manager called off his trip.
- put off «ertelemek» → postpone. Cümle geçmişte: postponed.
- call off «iptal etmek» → cancel. Amerikan yazımında geçmiş biçim tek l ile yazılır: canceled.
- Cümlenin geri kalanı değişmez.

Ayrılabilen fiilde it, them, him, her fiille parçacığın arasına girer: turn it off, pick her up, throw them away. turn off it diye bir dizilim yoktur.
- look for, look after bölünmez
Ayrılmayan fiilde nesne her zaman sondadır: look for it, look after them, get over it. look it for yanlıştır.
- look forward to’dan sonra -ing gelir
Buradaki to mastar eki değil, edattır; arkasından fiil -ing alır: I’m looking forward to seeing you (to see you değil). give up, end up ve make up for da -ing ister: give up smoking.
- Uyanmak ile kalkmak ayrı fiiller
wake up gözünü açmak, get up yataktan çıkmaktır. «Sabah yedide kalkarım» cümlesi I get up at seven olur.
- Arabaya get in, otobüse get on
Otomobil ve taksiye get in, otobüs, tren ve uçağa get on ile binilir. İnerken de çift değişir: get out of the car, get off the bus.
