some- (olumlu) · any- (olumsuz / soru) · every- (tümü)

Olumlu cümlede «bir şey, biri, bir yer» derken something, somebody, somewhere kullanılır; soru ve olumsuzda ise başı any- olur (anything, anybody, anywhere).

Çok önemli kural: everybody (herkes) ve everything (her şey) anlamca çoğul gibi dursa da İngilizcede her zaman tekil fiil (is / was / -s) alır:

Torbada ne var, kapının arkasında kim var?

En sık hata: «Herkes burada» derken Everybody are here demek. Bu tabloda gördüğün 12 kelimenin tamamı tekil sayılır: Everybody is here · Everything was ready.

somebody ile someone arasında hiçbir fark yoktur; günlük konuşmada ikisi de aynı sıklıkta kullanılır.

Tek olumsuz kuralı: nothing · nobody · nowhere

Türkçede «Hiçbir şey görmedim» derken hem «hiçbir şey» deriz hem de fiili olumsuz yaparız. İngilizcede ise bir cümlede iki olumsuz yan yana gelmez!

nothing, nobody, nowhere kelimelerinin içinde zaten no (olumsuzluk) vardır; bu yüzden olumlu fiille kullanılırlar:

İki yoldan birini seç: isn’t anything = is nothing

There is nothing in the white bowl.is + nothing

Beyaz kapta hiçbir şey yok.

İstasyonda hiç kimse yok.

ate + nothing

I ate nothing this morning.

Bu sabah hiçbir şey yemedim.

didn’t + anywhere

We didn’t go anywhere last night.

Dün gece hiçbir yere gitmedik.

Nobody + olumlu fiil

Nobody called me yesterday.

Dün beni hiç kimse aramadı.

En sık hata: I don’t see nothing ya da I didn’t eat nothing. Cümlede don’t / didn’t / isn’t / can’t varsa arkasından nothing değil, mutlaka anything gelir!

Cümle Nothing veya Nobody ile başlıyorsa devamındaki fiil olumlu olmak zorundadır: Nobody knows the answer.

Aynı anlamın iki doğru yolu (ve tek yanlış yolu)

Fiilde n’t varsa any-, fiil olumluysa no- seçilir.
