Tekil: this (bu) · that (şu)

Elindeki ya da hemen önündeki tek bir şey için this (bu), biraz uzaktaki tek bir şey için that (şu / o) kullanılır.

İkisi de tekil olduğu için yanlarına her zaman is gelir. Örneklere bak:

Hangisi yakın, hangisi uzak?

Is that…?

Is that your key? — Yes, it is.

Şu senin anahtarın mı? — Evet, öyle.

Türkçede yakınlığa göre «bu, şu, o» diye üç kelime vardır; İngilizcede ise yalnız iki basamak var: elinin altındaysa this, uzaktaysa that.

Is this …? ya da Is that …? sorusuna kısa cevap verirken Yes, this is. demeyiz; Yes, it is. ya da No, it isn’t. deriz.

Tekilde iki kullanım biçimi

Hem tek başına (This is …) hem de ismin önünde (This cup is …) kullanılabilir.

Çoğul: these (bunlar) · those (şunlar)

Gösterdiğin şeyler birden fazlaysa this yerine these (bunlar), that yerine those (şunlar / onlar) gelir.

Çoğul oldukları için fiil is değil, her zaman are olur:

  • Are these croissants fresh? – Yes, they are.
  • Are those your books? – No, they aren’t.

Birden fazla olunca

Bunlar beyaz fincan.

These croissants are fresh.these + çoğul

These croissants are fresh.

Bu kruvasanlar taze.

Türk öğrencinin en sık hatası: Türkçede «bu kitaplar, şu bulutlar» derken «bu/şu» tekil kalır. İngilizcede isim çoğulsa başındaki işaret kelimesi de çoğul olmak zorundadır: this books değil, these books; that clouds değil, those clouds.

Okunuş farkı: this kısa ve keskin («dis»), these ise uzatılarak ve sonunda z sesiyle («diiz») okunur.
