B1

20 questions, in order

20 questions drawn from 20 topics at B1. Pick an option; correct answers open when the exam ends.

Ich warte ___ dich.

Correct answer auf. warten auf + Akkusativ. «für» is the straight translation of English «for» — with this verb German doesn’t accept it.

Ich kenne den Mann, ___ dort steht.

Correct answer der. It does not matter that the noun is Akkusativ in the main clause — in the relative clause the man is standing, so he is the subject. Masculine + Nominativ → der.

Ich versuche, früh ___ schlafen.

Correct answer zu. versuchen is not a modal, so the second verb takes zu. um zu does not fit here because there is no purpose.

___ ich ein Kind war, wohnten wir in Izmir.

Correct answer Als. One period in the past — not repeated. For “when I was a child” German always uses als.

Nachdem ich gegessen ___, ging ich los.

Correct answer hatte. The main clause is in the Präteritum (ging), so the nachdem clause drops one step back — into the Plusquamperfekt.

Das Auto ___ repariert. (right now)

Correct answer wird. Präsens Passiv = werden + Partizip II. ist repariert is also a correct sentence, but it means “is in a repaired state” — a state, not an action.

Wenn ich Zeit ___, würde ich kommen.

Correct answer hätte. haben is one of the eight exceptions — it has its own Konjunktiv II form and is not built with würde.

How do you say “I’m going to the doctor tomorrow” in everyday speech?

Correct answer Morgen gehe ich zum Arzt. The second sentence is correct too, but it sounds formal. Since morgen is in the sentence, the future is already given — the Präsens is enough.

Das ist das Auto ___ Mannes.

Correct answer des. Masculine and neuter nouns take the Genitiv article des, and the noun gets -es: des Mannes.

Ich trinke ___ Kaffee ___ Tee.

Correct answer weder … noch. The pattern itself is already negative — no extra nicht. Exactly the logic of English “neither … nor”.

Ich weiß nicht, ___ er heute kommt.

Correct answer ob. “I don’t know whether he’s coming” — there is a yes/no question inside. wenn means “if (provided that)” and would break the meaning of the sentence.

What does “Er muss krank sein” mean?

Correct answer He must be sick. A state follows, not an action (krank sein) — that is the sign the modal has moved to its guessing meaning.

In dieser Stadt ___ es viele Parks.

Correct answer gibt — “there is / there are” is expressed with one fixed phrase in German: es gibt. Translating word by word from English does not give es ist or es hat.

Ich ___ morgen mein Auto reparieren.

Correct answer You use lassen to have someone else do a job.

Ich frage den ___ nach dem Weg.

Correct answer Polizist (-ist) belongs to the N-Deklination group. In the Akkusativ it takes -en.

Ich muss heute eine wichtige Entscheidung ___.

Correct answer treffen — “to make a decision” is eine Entscheidung treffen in German. It is not a word-for-word match with English “make”; learn this noun-verb pair as a set phrase.

___ Entscheidung war richtig.

Correct answer Die — nouns ending in -ung are feminine, without exception. This ending makes a noun from a verb (entscheiden → die Entscheidung) and brings its article along.

Er hat einen ___ Job. (anstrengen)

Correct answer anstrengenden — Partizip I (anstrengend) takes adjective endings like any adjective. Because einen is masculine Akkusativ, the adjective takes -en: “a tiring job”.

Bist du stolz ___ deine Leistung?

Correct answer auf — stolz auf + Akkusativ is a fixed pair. Adjective-preposition pairs can’t be guessed from English; you memorise each adjective together with the preposition it comes with.

Sie ist ___ (a German).

Correct answer eine Deutsche. For a woman you use eine, and the adjective ending is -e.

Unanswered questions count as wrong.
