kündige. Hiermit fills the first slot, the verb comes in the second slot, and the subject falls behind it. This is the standard opening of formal letters.

You signed up online three days ago and changed your mind. Hiermit ich den Vertrag vom 15.08.2026.

widerrufe. The right you use within the first 14 days of a distance contract is Widerruf — not Kündigung. The wrong verb comes back with the answer “your contract continues”.

Ich kündige den Vertrag 30.09.2026.

I cancel the contract as of 30.09.2026.

zum. In contract language, the day the cancellation ends the contract comes with zum. If you don’t know the date, write zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt.

Your contract is automatically extended by twelve months.

wird. wird + Partizip II = Vorgangspassiv: the extension is happening. It is the sentence you will see most often in a company’s letter, and the one that costs the most.

Der Vertrag kann monatlich gekündigt .

The contract can be cancelled monthly.

werden. The modal + Passiv pattern always ends in Partizip II + werden: … gekündigt werden, … eingereicht werden.

Die Kündigung muss dem Anbieter bis zum 30.11. .

The cancellation must reach the provider by 30.11.

zugehen. With a modal, the infinitive goes to the end. The meaning matters too: what counts is not that you sent it but that it reached the other side — posting it on the last day is too late.

What does “Kündigungsfrist: 3 Monate zum Monatsende” mean?

There are two pieces of information: the period (three months) and the end point (month-end). A cancellation given on 10 March takes effect on 30 June.

What is the safest way to send a cancellation letter?

In a dispute, proving that it arrived is up to you. Einschreiben mit Rückschein gives you a signed proof of delivery.

schriftlich = in writing. Asking for confirmation is a standard sentence at the end of formal letters.

What is an “außerordentliche Kündigung”?

außerordentlich = extraordinary. With a serious reason, you don’t have to wait for the period. The normal ordentliche Kündigung respects the period.

Ich kündige meinen Arbeitsvertrag mündlich. (I am terminating my employment contract verbally.)

Terminating an employment contract (or a tenancy) must be done in writing (schriftlich) with a handwritten signature; verbally or by email it is invalid. For most subscriptions, on the other hand, an email or online cancellation is enough.

The time limit for ending a contract, the “notice period”, is expressed with Kündigungs.

frist. Kündigung (cancellation) and Frist (period) combine into die Kündigungsfrist.

  1. Read the period and the end point together

    3 Monate zum Monatsende gives two pieces of information: a three-month period and that it takes effect at the end of a month. A cancellation given on 10 March takes effect on 30 June.

  2. Letter pattern: Hiermit kündige ich …

    A cancellation letter starts with Hiermit; because it opens the sentence, the verb follows right after it. The date is given with zum.

  3. Widerruf is a separate right

    Contracts made online come with a right of withdrawal for the first 14 days: widerrufen. It is not a cancellation; it treats the contract as if it never existed.

  4. Proving that it arrived is your job

    The period runs from the day the letter reaches the other side (zugehen). That is why people send Einschreiben mit Rückschein.

    Cancellation is sent in writing and provably.

    In a dispute it is up to you to prove it arrived; a phone call leaves no record.
