Which word is the opposite of jung?

alt. For people the pair is jung ↔ alt (young ↔ old). neu is the end of the pair for things: neu ↔ alt (new ↔ old).

“The bag is very light.” Which one?

The opposite of heavy is leicht; einfach means “easy, simple”. An adjective after the verb takes no ending, so leichte is wrong too.

Which adjective means both “heavy” and “hard”?

schwer: Die Tasche ist schwer (heavy) · Die Prüfung ist schwer (hard). schwierig only means “difficult”, stark means “strong”.

You are bored. Which one?

Mir ist langweilig. Ich bin langweilig means “I’m a boring person”. The person who is bored stands in the Dativ: mir, not the Akkusativ mich.

“I have a new car.” Which one?

The adjective stands before the noun, so it takes an ending: ein neues Auto. In German, too, the adjective doesn’t move behind the noun.

Die Wohnung ist große. — the adjective is used correctly in this sentence.

False. An adjective after the verb takes no ending: Die Wohnung ist groß. The ending comes only before a noun: eine große Wohnung.

Build the sentence: The kitchen is small but clean.

Tap the pieces to build the sentence

Both adjectives come after the verb, both without an ending: Die Küche ist klein, aber sauber.

Mein Bruder ist jünger ich.

My brother is younger than me.

als. The adjective has an ending (jünger), so it is “than”: als. wie is only for equality, so jung wie.

Which is the comparative of teuer?

teurer. An adjective ending in -er drops the middle e when it gets an ending. “mehr + adjective” doesn’t exist in German.

Er ist so groß wie ich. — this sentence means “He is as tall as me.”

True. For equality there is no ending: so + adjective + wie = “as … as”. For “taller than me” you would say Er ist größer als ich.
Quick rules

The rules in three lines

The full topic lives on its own page. This is only the core you need for the test.

  1. No ending after the verb

An adjective after the verb never changes, just like in English.

    Das Auto ist neu.

  2. An ending before a noun

Once the adjective sits in front of a noun, it takes an ending. That is the only part to memorise.

ein neues Auto · eine große Wohnung

  3. “than” = als, “as … as” = so … wie

When you compare, the adjective takes -er and als follows. For equality there is no ending.

Er ist größer als ich. · Er ist so groß wie ich.

  4. Pick the opposite by context

alt: for things neu, for people jung. schwer: for weight leicht, for difficulty einfach.

Der Koffer ist schwer, die Tasche ist leicht.
