Er hat einen Job. (anstrengen)

He has a tiring job.

anstrengenden — Partizip I (anstrengend) takes adjective endings like any adjective. Because einen is masculine Akkusativ, the adjective takes -en: “a tiring job”.

Der Kaffee ist heiß. (kochen)

The boiling coffee is hot.

The coffee is still boiling (active) -> kochend + e (der Kaffee).

Ich kaufe einen Wagen. (gebrauchen)

I’m buying a used (second-hand) car.

The car has been used before (passive/finished) -> Partizip II (gebraucht) + Akkusativ der Wagen (-en).

Der Hund ist laut. (bellen)

The barking dog is loud.

The dog is barking by itself (active) -> Partizip I (bellend) + Nominativ (-e).

Wir reparieren das Radio. (kaputtgehen)

We’re repairing the broken radio.

The event is finished (it has broken) -> Partizip II (kaputtgegangen) + Akkusativ das (-e).

Er spricht mit der Frau. (weinen)

He’s talking to the crying woman.

Because weinen takes “haben”, it cannot form a Partizip II adjective (geweint). Because of the Dativ, the Partizip I takes -en (weinenden).

Hast du den Brief gelesen? (schreiben)

Have you read the written letter?

The letter has been written and is finished (passive) -> Partizip II (geschrieben) + Akkusativ den (-en).

Die Kinder spielen im Garten. (lachen)

The laughing children are playing in the garden.

Plural (die) Nominativ -> adjective ending -en (die lachenden).

Build the sentence: Don’t wake the sleeping baby. (das Baby)

Tap the pieces to build the sentence

Sleeping (active) -> schlafend. das (Akk) -> schlafende.

das reparierende Auto — means “the repaired car”.

False. “reparierende” is Partizip I and means “repairing”. A car cannot repair itself. The correct form is “das reparierte Auto”.
Quick rules

The rules in three lines

The full topic lives on its own page. This is only the core you need for the test.

  1. Active = Partizip I, finished = Partizip II

If the event is going on, add -d. Use Partizip II when a transitive verb expresses a passive/finished action, or when an intransitive verb with sein expresses an active but finished state.

der kochende Kaffee (boiling), das eingeschlafene Baby (fallen asleep)
