Ich trinke Kaffee.

I don’t drink coffee.

keinen. A noun without an article is being negated → kein. der Kaffee is masculine and in object position, so it is Akkusativ: keinen.

Das ist mein Buch.

This isn’t my book.

nicht. There is a possessive (mein) in front of the noun — a specific thing is being talked about, so it is nicht.

Ich bin Lehrer.

I’m not a teacher.

kein. A job title is used without an article (Ich bin Lehrer), and a noun without an article is negated with kein.

— Hast du keine Zeit? — , ich habe Zeit!

Don’t you have time? — …, I do have time!

Doch. When you contradict a negative question you say doch, not ja — English has no one-word equivalent, so it is the word learners skip most often.

Which one is correct?

Ich kann heute nicht kommen. nicht stands right in front of the infinitive at the end; the time information comes before it.

Where does nicht go in the sentence? — “I’m not coming today.”

nicht, when it negates the verb, moves toward the end of the sentence: Ich komme heute nicht.

When do you use kein?

kein = nicht ein: Ich habe kein Auto · keine Zeit. A noun with a definite article takes nicht: Das ist nicht mein Buch.

Which one means “nothing”?

nicht is the negation word, while nichts is the pronoun “nothing”: Ich sehe nichts. One letter s changes the meaning.

Can you use a double negative? — “I don’t see anybody.”

German does not use DOUBLE NEGATIVES: niemand is already negative, and nicht is not added.

Which one means “no longer”? — I don’t smoke any more.

The set phrase: nicht mehr = no longer. The order is fixed: nicht first, mehr second.

The sentence “Ich trinke nicht Kaffee.” is correct.

False. Nouns without an article are negated with kein. The correct version: Ich trinke keinen Kaffee.

Ich habe Zeit.

I have no time.

keine. Zeit is a feminine noun without an article, so keine is used.

Build the sentence: I can’t come today.

Tap the pieces to build the sentence

nicht comes after the time information (heute) and before the infinitive.
Quick rules

The rules in three lines

The full topic lives on its own page. This is only the core you need for the test.

  1. kein negates nouns, nicht the rest

Noun without an article or with ein → kein. Verb, adjective, definite noun → nicht.

kein Auto · nicht mein Buch

  2. nicht moves toward the end

When you negate the verb: Ich komme heute nicht. When you negate a specific element, it goes in front of it: nicht mein Buch.

    Ich kann heute nicht kommen.

  3. Answer a negative question with Doch!

Hast du keine Zeit? — Doch! (of course I do). Ja stays ambiguous here.

    Doch, ich habe Zeit!

  4. No double negatives

nichts · niemand · nie are already negative; you don’t add nicht. “Not any more” = nicht mehr.

    Ich sehe niemanden.
