Pick an option and press «Next». You can go back and change it. Anything left blank counts as wrong.

Ich warte dich.

I am waiting for you.

auf. warten auf + Akkusativ. «für» is the straight translation of English «for» — with this verb German doesn’t accept it.

Ich freue mich deinen Brief. (the letter has arrived)

über — the event already happened. For something still ahead of you it’s auf: Ich freue mich auf den Urlaub.

Ich nehme dem Kurs teil.

I am taking part in the course.

an + dative (dem Kurs). teilnehmen an takes the dative, while denken an takes the accusative — «an» takes either case, depending on the verb. English «take part in» pushes you towards «in», which is wrong here.

wartest du? (you mean your brother)

Auf wen. The wo(r)-/da(r)- forms are only for things and situations, so Worauf would mean you’re waiting for an object. «Auf was» is heard in speech but is not standard written German — for a thing the correct written form is Worauf.

Ich freue mich das Wochenende. (looking forward)

I'm looking forward to the weekend.

Future thing you await → auf. Thing that already happened → über. Same verb, two feelings.

Ich interessiere mich Geschichte.

I am interested in history.

sich interessieren für — the preposition belongs to the verb, learn them as one word.

Ich denke oft dich.

I often think of you.

denken an + accusative = think of someone. nachdenken über = ponder a topic.

Er ärgert sich den Lärm.

He is annoyed about the noise.

sich ärgern über — annoyance is always über.

Asking about a THING: Ich warte auf den Bus → wartest du?

What are you waiting for?

Things ask with wo(r)+preposition: worauf · womit · wovon. People keep the preposition + wen/wem.

Replacing a THING: Ich warte auf den Bus. → Ich warte .

I am waiting for it.

Things compress to da(r)+preposition: darauf · damit · davon. auf ihn would mean a person.
Quick rules

The rules in three lines

The full topic lives on its own page. This is only the core you need for the test.

  1. Learn verb and preposition as one word

warten auf · sich interessieren für · denken an · sich ärgern über — the preposition is part of the verb, not a choice.

    Ich warte auf dich.

  2. auf = ahead, über = behind you

sich freuen auf = look forward to (future) · sich freuen über = be happy about (it happened).

auf das Wochenende · über deinen Brief

  3. Things ask with wo(r)-

Worauf wartest du? (thing) vs Auf wen wartest du? (person).

    Worauf wartest du?

  4. Things compress to da(r)-

Ich warte darauf. · Ich denke daran. People keep the pronoun: auf ihn · an sie.

    Ich warte darauf.
