I’m at the doctor’s.

beim Arzt. No movement, just position → bei. zum Arzt is for going there; im Arzt would mean “inside the doctor”.

Bleib heute . (stay at my place)

bleiben = to stay

bei mir. bei always takes the dative; ich becomes mir in the dative. mich is accusative and is never used with bei.

I work at Siemens.

bei Siemens. Use bei for an employer: bei der Post · bei einer Bank · bei BMW.

Ich bin Arbeit.

I’m at work.

bei der Arbeit. die Arbeit is feminine, it becomes der in the dative, and bei only contracts with dem — the feminine does not contract.

I live at my parents’ place.

bei meinen Eltern. If the home is theirs, bei. With mit you would say “together with my parents” — a shared home. The plural dative is meinen.

Wetter gehe ich nicht nach draußen. (in this weather)

das Wetter = the weather

Bei diesem Wetter. das Wetter is neuter, and in the dative it becomes diesem. bei expresses a condition here: “when it is…”.

I’m at school. (inside the building)

in der Schule. If you are inside a space, use in. bei der Schule means “near the school” — you are outside.

Regen bleiben wir drinnen.

When it rains, we stay inside.

bei also expresses a condition or situation: bei Regen (when it rains) · bei diesem Wetter (in this weather).

Essen telefoniere ich nicht.

I don’t talk on the phone while eating.

bei + dem = beim. With a noun made from a verb it means “while …-ing”: beim Essen (while eating) · beim Lernen.

Which one is correct?

Being at a tradesperson’s is bei: beim Arzt · beim Friseur. im is for the inside of a space, not for a person.

“Ich gehe beim Arzt.” is a correct sentence.

False. bei expresses position (being there). When you are going somewhere (movement), you need zu: Ich gehe zum Arzt.

Ich arbeite Siemens.

I work at Siemens.

bei. bei is used to say you work at a company, for an employer.

Build the sentence: I don’t talk while eating.

Tap the pieces to build the sentence

To add the “while …-ing” meaning and mark a simultaneous action, use bei dem = beim. Because the time expression comes first, the verb is in second position.

The full topic lives on its own page. This is only the core you need for the test.
